FUTSAL – ITS ORIGIN AND GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT
Futsal started in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930 when Juan Carlos Ceriani created a version of indoor football for recreation in YMCAs. This new sport was developed originally on basketball courts and a rule book was published in September 1933, the South American Futsal Confederation was formed, consisting of Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Argentina and Brazil.
The sport began to spread across South America, and its popularity ensured that a governing body was formed under the name of FIFUSA (Federación Internacional de Fútbol de Salón) in 1971, comprising Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay, along with the World Championships. The first FIFUSA World Championships were held in São Paulo, with host Brazil crowned champion ahead of Paraguay and Uruguay. Even more countries participated in the second World Championships held in Madrid in 1985. Due to a dispute between FIFA and FIFUSA over the name of fútbol, FIFUSA has registered the word futsal in 1985, Madrid, Spain.
The game is frequently referred to as Five-A-Side. Once Ceriani got the ball rolling, Futsal gained rapid popularity throughout South America, particularly in Brazil. The skill developed in this game is visible in the world-famous style the Brazilians display outdoors on the full-sized field. Pele, Ronaldinho, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Bebeto, Marta, Romario, and other Brazilian superstars developed their skill playing Futsal. While Brazil continues to be the Futsal hub of the world, the game is now played all over the world, from Europe to North and Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Asia and Oceania
In 2002, members of PANAFUTSAL (Pan-American Futsal Confederation) formed AMF (World Futsal Association), an international futsal governing body, maintaining FIFUSA‘s ‘Historical’ Leadership in World Futsal. Exercising its sovereign right, the Federación Internacional de Fútbol de Salón (FIFUSA) resolved on Dec. 1, 2002, to change its name, to update its social and sport objectives and reorganize its structure in order accommodate new and existing demands. From that date, the Asociación Mundial de Futsal (AMF) is the new worldwide organization that reunites FIFUSA’s member countries, maintaining the historical, cultural and sports leadership of its predecessor. The sport is different from and independent of any other existing world-wide organization, it is play in 5 vs. 5 style in a hardwood floor hall.
The latest Men’s Futsal World Championship was held in Colombia IN 2011 and the host country resulted the champion. The first Youth Under-12 World Futsal Championship took place in Quito, Ecuador in 2003, with 16 countries participating. The second Youth Under-12 World Futsal Championship was also held in Quito, Ecuador in 2004. The First Women’s Futsal World Cup was held on 2008 and won by Catalunya.
Now, in 20013, Colombia will host II Women’s Futsal World Cup with the participation of 16 national teams, and TEAM CANADA WNT will be one of them.
