Wozniak defeats Hantuchova and the rain
On Tuesday night at Uniprix Stadium, Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak thrilled fans in Montréal by getting through to the second round of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over Daniela Hantuchova.
It was a roller-coaster match, and Wozniak, who vacillated between nervousness and brilliance, wasted two match points when she was on serve at 6-5 in the second set, letting Hantuchova try to claw her way back.
Then the rain fell, and the rivals were relegated to the locker room.
After a one-hour delay, the players returned to the court for the decisive game. Wozniak gave it her all and converted her third match point after 1:42 in a bout that actually lasted over two and a half hours.
With 82 points versus 71 for her opponent, Wozniak fully deserved the win. But she had eight double faults and was broken six times and was unable to close things out earlier.
In the first match of the evening, Stéphanie Dubois of Laval wasn’t as lucky. She stole the first set 6-1 from Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa and seemed headed for success, but the Canadian ultimately ran out of steam and lost the next two sets 6-3, 6-0, passing up a great opportunity to ascend in the rankings.
Wozniak will play her second round match on Thursday.

“I feel the last couple weeks I've been playing pretty well, and so perfect timing for the Olympics. Had a tough draw in singles there and a tough loss in doubles, but played well. Incredible experience. Then to come right over here the next week and play a tournament that I've been looking forward to all year, for sure it's a pretty exciting summer for me.”
- Vasek Pospisil on playing Rogers Cup following his first Olympic experience.
- Australia’s Bernard Tomic looking forward to his second round match-up with top seed Novak Djokovic.
- Vasek Pospisil on playing in front of Canadian fans at Rogers Cup following his first-round win.
- No. 5 seed Janko Tipsarevic on Toronto’s large and enthusiastic Serbian community.
- Vasek Pospisil following his first-round victory over Andreas Seppi, which he captured in a third-set tiebreaker.
- Monday winner Jeremy Chardy on his upcoming second-round match against fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
We are very pleased to welcome you to the 2012 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank at Rexall Centre on the campus of York University.
This event annually brings Canada to the centre stage of international sport. The third-oldest tournament in all of tennis, behind only Wimbledon and the US Open, some of the greatest players in history have been crowned champion. Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, and Bjorn Borg are among the retired legends to have lifted the Canadian trophy, while the past eight years have seen world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray each capture two Rogers Cup titles.
For the second consecutive year, our two tournaments will be virtually combined, with the women's event in Montreal occurring simultaneously with ours. Reporters working from the media centre in Toronto will have full access to all of the information coming out of the women's tournament, including the ability to sit in on press conferences and ask questions of the WTA players via video technology.
On this page, you will find our new media guide in an easy-to-access format, containing background information, statistics, and other resources to aid in your coverage of the event. Other pertinent information, requiring updating, will be distributed when it becomes available throughout the course of the week both on-site and online.
If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact members of the Tennis Canada media relations staff or drop by the George Gross Media Centre. Representatives from the ATP World Tour will also be available to answer any special queries or requests.
We appreciate your valued coverage and support of this Canadian event. Rogers Cup presented by National Bank is owned and operated by Tennis Canada, and as a non-profit organization, all net surplus is directed towards tennis development.
Please enjoy the world-class tennis action and we wish you a very pleasant and memorable stay at Rexall Centre.
Sincerely,

A legendary evening
On Monday night, the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank hosted the Legends Event at Uniprix Stadium in Montréal.
The high point of the evening was the induction of Jim Courier of the US and Martina Hingis of Switzerland into the Rogers Cup Hall of Fame.
Courier was given a guitar autographed by members of the rock group Simple Plan, who were on hand for the occasion.
Hingis received a gift from rider Roger Deslauriers, who trotted onto Centre Court on his horse.
“All of the players will say that they love the tournament in Montréal,” said Courier. “I dreamed of being a baseball player, so I’m always especially happy to play tennis in an old baseball stadium,” he added, admitting that his induction was a great honour.
Hingis had only praise for the organization, which was kind enough to ask a rider and his horse to present her with her gift. Speaking in impeccable French, a language she learned from her husband of two years who happens to be a French rider, said she recognized she had always played well in Montréal.
As the evening got underway, the many spectators in the crowd were treated to mini-tennis matches, as teams led by comedian Martin Matte and Louis-José Houde went head-to-head. Tennis players of all ages, sports heroes and film and television stars were all part of the event.
After medals were presented to the young winners of the Mini Rogers Cup, which was held this weekend on the new mini-courts at Olympic Park, tennis fans witnessed a clash of the titans with tennis greats Martina Navratilova, Michael Chang, Jim Courier and Martina Hingis.
…Definitely the stuff of legends!
